Ayurvedic Philosophy

Ayurveda PhilosophyMedicine mainly treats Human Body as a mere Machine. But Ayurvedic Philosophy regards that our Human body is not merely a Machine but a live combination of Soul, Mind and Body. Ayurvedic Philosophy basically thinks about the Soul- Mind- Body Complex. And not only that, but thinks about the Universe in which we live and the Basic Elements responsible for its creation. Hence Ayurveda has framed its philosophy of the Universe and of all the living and Non-living Substances in this Universe accordingly. Unfortunately Modern Medical Science is totally devoid of such a Philosophy.

Elemental Theory of Ayurveda
The word 'Ayurveda 'is formed of two words 'Ayus + Vida'. 'Ayus' means 'Life' and 'Vida' means 'to know' or to attain'. Thus the term 'Ayurveda ' itself depicts the meaning of, 'the Science which imparts knowledge of life'. Ayurveda is not merely a Science of curing diseases but it is the Science of life itself. Hence Ayurveda has deeply thought of Human life, its surrounding universe and the basic constituents responsible for their formation. Ayurveda regards that Human life is the epitome of the Universe and it is Carved out of the Universal elements which closely knit both together. This is the basis of the Ayurvedic theory of 'Five basic Elements' or 'Panchamahabhutasiddhanta' which is the foundation of Ayurvedic Philosophy." The 'Universe' as envisaged by Ayurveda, is mainly the Earth, its atmosphere, the Sun, the Moon and the life on the Earth, though Universe as described in Vedas consists of galaxies and inumerable stars. According to Ayurveda, this Universe is made up of Nine Elements. They are, Earth (Prithwi), Water (Apa), Energy (Teja), Atmosphere (Vayu), Space (Akasa), Direction (Disha), Time (Kala), Mind (Mana) and Soul (Atma) Out of these, the first Seven elements are materials while mind and soul pertain to the life. These Nine elements are causative factors for the creation of the whole Animate and Inanimate kingdom of the universe. [Out of these Nine, the Five basic elements namely Earth, Water, Energy, Atmosphere and Space take active part in the creation of all Inanimate objects. The same Five elements together with Soul and Mind participate in the creation of all Animates - from Microbes to the Man, Nine Elements.

  1. EARTH - The Earth element Symbolises the basic structure of the World. It is the platform for the life processes in which Ayurveda is mainly interested. It represents Solid State of Matter.
  2. WATER - This element symbolising viscosity is responsible for the easy flow. Water represents the Liquid State of matter.
  3. ATMOSPHERE - This is something that fills the Space and forms the atmosphere for the earth. Atmosphere represents the Gaseous State of matter.
  4. ENERGY - Energy element is attained mainly from the Sun in the form of Heat and Light. The Moon also gives energy which is considered by Ayurveda as most Valuable for the formation of medicinal plants.
  5. SPACE - This element is like a cradle in which all the other elements are situated.
  6. DIRECTION - This element gives the boundaries of space. Accoroding to Satapatha Brahmana Text, 'the world is made stable by Directions'. Ayurveda regards 'Dasha Dishas' or Ten Directions' to make the space balanced.
  7. TIME - It is the element which determines Past, Present and Future. It controls the Evolution of Life and Universe.
  8. MIND- These are the life elements, Soul is & Indestructible Life - Energy and Mind the.
  9. SOUL Psyche.

Atomicity of Elements
According to Ayurveda, the Elements Earth, Water, Energy, Atmosphere and Mind are composed of Undividable particles called 'Anus'. In other Words, these elements are considered to be corpuscular. The Elements Space, Time and Direction are continuous and infinite. These and Soul are all Pervading. The structure of the Universe in View of Ayurveda is in confirmity with the ideas of the Modern Science according to which the Universe consists of matter in its three forms - Solids, Liquids and Gases and the Energy.

The three are composed of Atoms and Molecules corrseponding to Anus and Renus of Ayurveda. It is important here to note that hundreds of years ago, Ayurveda thought of even Energy to be corpuscular which corresponds to the Quantum Theory of Modern Science, which is established by Modern Scientists in the 20th Century. (E = MC). The continuous nature of Space and Time are also in accordance with the ideas of Modern Science. Sir lasac Newton compared Time' to a stream which flows from infinite Past to infinite Future.
